Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University has been conducting research and identifying the multiple intelligences of people since 1983. He defines an inteligence as the ability to solve problems or fashion products that are valued in one of more cultural settings. Dr. Gardner has identified nine intelligences. The nine intelligences are logical/mathematical, verbal/linguistic, visual/spatial, musical/rhythmic, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist and existential.
Since we have the capactiy for all intelligences, it is vitally important to recognize and nurture all of them. Our different combinations of stronger intelligences make us unique. The thematic curriculum and daily schedule provide opportunities for children to nurture all of the intelligences in a variety of ways through multiple modes of expression.
